Deaf Community

Deafness is one of the commonest congenital disabilities in the world. It is estimated to be 30 times more common than other congenital defects, such as sickle cell anemia, cystic fibrosis, hypothyroidism, etc. 
As reported by WHO, there are about 250-300 million deaf people in this world, 2/3 of them live in the underdeveloped nations, of these India has the largest share.

From a recent report in the India’s leading daily newspaper, The Times of India, Jan 23, 2007,   ” That one out of twelve (1/12) persons in India has hearing loss”

Objectives of the Project  - Can’t Stop Reading

The broad objective of the project is to provide income earning opportunities to the deaf community in Mumbai.

 The Specific objectives are:

  • To contribute to self development and  empowerment of the deaf community in Mumbai through training and exposure for development of soft skills, entrepreneurial orientation, and business skills; 

 

  • To initiate and run a not-for-profit business enterprise as a demonstration project for income generation purpose by the deaf community in Mumbai;

 

  • To facilitate creating income earning opportunities for the deaf community in Mumbai through self employment and job opportunities;

 

  • To network with other organizations working for deaf community in Mumbai and elsewhere for the cause of economic empowerment of the community.
